If/when the official RUU (software update) for 2.1 is released, do NOT install it. Let's be clear about why not. Your phone (presuming you use VillainROM or another rooted custom ROM) is currently rooted and you can install new ROMs via recovery or fastboot. If you install an official update, a new bootloader is highly likely to be installed onto the phone, and recovery either removed or restored to the default 'useless' version. This would essentially stop you from re-rooting and installing other software on the phone. If you want an example of the trouble here, look at the Droid Eris forums on xda-developers (http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=554). Some devs installed the leaked build on their phones (the Eris was not rooted at the time, but the leak was signed). Since the leak, the old 1.5 ROM was rooted, and an exploit found that allows fastboot security to be disabled. Those who installed this leak now cannot downgrade and cannot root their phones. Don't let it happen to you with the official 2.1 update. Don't install it. If you get access to the RUU file, contact one of the devs and we'll arrange to make it 'safe' and root it before releasing it on the site. Just remember that it won't take long at all for a pre-rooted (safe) version of the official rom to be cooked so just wait the very little time and install a version where you know you will be rooted for life
