About a month ago there were leaks that most people would get an update for their Hero by the 16th of April. However, that day has come and gone so when is the official 2.1 Rom Coming? This Android life sent an email to HTC asking when the official will come. They found out that it should be released at the end on April.
So the official Rom should be coming soon but we will then have to wait for a rooted version otherwise your device will be unrooted. A rooted version will hopefully come within days of the official release so we all should be using the most stable 2.1 Rom yet very soon!
